In April 1999, the Unit replaced the RAF Benson-based ‘Squirrel’ helicopter with a Eurocopter EC135.

At that time, it was a state-of-the-art aircraft fitted with the latest thermal imaging camera and a moving map system which aids navigation and allows for improved mission management. The ‘Skyforce’ moving map system provides computerised mapping from aviation level, through ordnance survey down to street mapping and even individual buildings.

In 2002, a second EC135, designated G-CPSH, replaced the Luton-based ‘Squirrel’.
