Superintendent Andy Standen is currently the Head of Change at Thames Valley Police having been promoted into the post in September 2009.

Andy joined the police in 1983 and completed much of his service in the north of the Thames Valley Police area, at Milton Keynes and Aylesbury. His team received an award for the innovative Retail Theft Initiative, in the early days of Restorative Justice in the UK.

He was seconded to a role at Milton Keynes Council in 1999 introducing a multi-agency Traveller Management Unit, where his work was recognised as good practice at local, Force and national level. As an Inspector, Andy was based at HQ Operations after 9/11, in the role of Major Incident Advisor and in contingency planning. This role expanded to develop the Force’s first capability for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear (CBRN) response, for which he received a Chief Constable’s commendation.

Andy returned to Milton Keynes in 2005 and was promoted to Chief Inspector, at the forefront of rolling out Neighbourhood Policing, delivered in a partnership approach. He was very involved with local communities and established strong relationships with minority communities. He continued to be very involved in operational policing, commanding planned events, operations and major incidents such as the Wolverton community disorder after a local murder and the scaffold collapse at the Jury’s Inn Hotel building site. Most recently, in his new role, Andy has led the Force approach to Productivity and Efficiency savings and has responsibility for coordinating all aspects of major change within the Force. His operational role now covers Critical Incident management, as well as policing protest, football and other operational matters at a Tactical (Silver) level. He was Silver Commander for Royal Ascot in 2011 and is one of the commanders preparing for the Olympics in 2012.
