Disability

Thames Valley Police does not tolerate discrimination of people who are disabled and continually seeks to promote equality of opportunity between people with and without disabilities.

Disability is one of our ‘six strands of diversity’.

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 places a duty on all public authorities to:

  • Promote equality of opportunity between disabled people and other people.
  • Eliminate discrimination that is unlawful to the Act.
  • Eliminate harassment of disabled people that is referred to their disabilities.
  • Promote positive attitudes towards disabled people.
  • Encourage participation by disabled people in public life.
  • Take steps to take account of disabled people’s disabilities, even where that involves treating disabled people more favourably than other people.

What is disability?

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 defines disability as: ‘a physical or mental impairment which has a substantial and long-term adverse effect on a person’s ability to carry out normal day-to-day activities’.

There are over 8.7 million disabled people in the United Kingdom. This includes 5.5 million who are of working age – this represents 16 per cent of the working population.
