Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements
The Criminal Justice and Court Services Act 2000 and the Criminal Justice Act 2003 require the police, probation and prison services to join together and act as ‘the responsible authority’ to establish formal arrangements to make sure that the public are protected from dangerous and serial sex offenders.
This partnership working is known as Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA).
‘The responsible authority’ has responsibility for:
- Establishing arrangements for assessing the risks posed by violent and sexual offenders.
- Reviewing and monitoring the arrangements.
- Preparing and publishing an annual report of their operation.
