Brothers violent crimes ended by joint police operation - Bucks, Berks and Herts
Thursday 19 November 2009, 3:07pm
Two brothers have been sentenced to prison terms at Woolwich Crown Court today (19/11), for a spree of serious crimes across Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Hertfordshire.
Jason McInerney, aged 21, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to eleven burglaries, seven thefts, one count of grievous bodily harm, one robbery, one aggravated burglary and one count of actual bodily harm.
His brother, Wayne McInerney, aged 23, also pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to two counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent and one of grievous bodily harm.
The two men committed their crimes throughout July and August 2008.
Among their crimes is the grievous assault of a man offering up his car parking space at the Brookfield Retail Centre, Cheshunt on 26 July 2008.
Wayne McInerney pleaded guilty to assaulting the man, who sustained multiple facial fractures as a result of the unprovoked attack and has been left with a number of plates in his skull, reduced sensation to his face and impaired vision in his right eye.
On another occasion, a police motorcycle trainer was out with two students when he attempted to stop a stolen Porsche which the McInerney’s were travelling in along the A40 in Denham. The instructor was rammed by the car but, despite his bike being lodged in the front of the car for up to 35 metres, he was not seriously injured. One of his students was not so fortunate, as he sustained a broken leg and hip when the car was intentionally reversed on to him as he went to the instructor’s aid. Wayne McInerney pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent to endanger life for this incident. His brother Jason, pleaded guilty to holding up a female driver with an axe so they could steal her car to flee the scene.
The pair were arrested at a Heathrow hotel after a lengthy operation led by Thames Valley Police and Hertfordshire Constabulary, which spanned across London and eight counties.
Wayne McInerney was sentenced to a total of four years in prison and his brother Jason McInerney was sentenced to three years and nine months.
Det Ch Insp Mick Saunders led the investigation. He said: “This was a very strong, collaborative investigation by both Thames Valley Police and Hertfordshire Constabulary, with excellent support from Thames Valley Crown Prosecution Service.
“The guilty pleas accepted show the thoroughness of the investigations and the determined efforts of the detectives involved. This saved their victims the emotional distress of reliving their experience, in some cases of an unprovoked, violent attack, from the witness box.
“These brothers were utterly lawless and cowardly in the selection of their victims and had no qualms about the damage, loss, harm and distress they left in their wake.
“Today they have been brought to justice and the judge’s sentences will serve to protect the community for years to come.”
