Newbury Town Centre neighbourhood
Local priorities - 'You said, We did'
The following priorities have been identified by the community and the police:
You said: Policing the Night Time Economy
The night time economy in Newbury Town Centre at the weekends attracts a lot of the members of our community. Some of these people consume too much alcohol becoming anti-social in their behaviour to the point of committing criminal offences. The businesses and community in the town need to be protected from these people and feel safe to enjoy their evenings.
1.Part of Operation Nightsafe is a high visibility patrol in the town centre meeting and greeting members of public entering the town. 2.A later stage of Operation Nightsafe is an enhanced high visibility patrol where the number of Police officers increases to meet the growing number of people in town who may be intoxicated. 3.Additional resources for example our mounted section or officers from the dog section are utilized for events like Newbury races where Newbury can experience thousands of additional visitors. 4.As a member of Pub Watch we help identify repeat offenders that are added to the exclusion list. We support the scheme and offer training to Publicans and Door staff.
You said: Begging and street drinking
The issue of begging, street drinking and vagrancy in the Town Centre is to be addressed.
1.We have developed good relationships and lines of communication with the homeless by attending regular Loose Ends meetings where homeless and vulnerable are given food and clothes. 2.Working with the Shop Safe Scheme and radios we share information regarding people begging or people drunk in the Town Centre. This allows for fast responses and strong intelligence. 3.Partnership working with agencies like the Town and County Council to support and promote housing opportunities for the homeless and vulnerable in need. 4.High visibility patrols and a robust enforcement of the local by law preventing drinking alcohol in public focused in the Town Centre.
These are being dealt with by your neighbourhood policing team in partnership with residents and other agencies. Progress will be reported in the Neighbourhood updates.
