Wildlife crime law

All animals and plants are protected in law, although this level of protection varies according to the species.

Hunting Act 2004

The Hunting Act 2004, which came into effect in February 2005, made the hunting with dogs of all wild animals an offence. It completely banned hare coursing.

Thames Valley Police treats illegal hunting as wildlife crime and any allegations of offences are fully investigated.

In policing the Act, the Force aims to preserve the peace and safety of the public, and minimise the consequences of disorder. We liaise with both hunts and anti-hunt groups in Thames Valley.

There are some exceptions to allow essential activities such as pest control to continue, subject to strict conditions. The Act does not stop people from riding with their dogs – as long as they remain within the law.
