Driving security
Please consider the crime prevention advice below to make sure that your car is secure while you are driving.
- Check that your car is okay to drive – is it in good working condition? Plan your journey, using maps and online route planners.
- If you are visiting somewhere that you don't know very well, don't ask strangers for directions. Use a map.
- Tell someone what time you expect to arrive at your destination. Let them know if your journey is delayed.
- Do not leave personal items on display while you are driving. Thieves may aim to steal items by opening car doors and breaking windows while cars are stationary at traffic lights or stuck in traffic.
- If you feel that you are being followed strangely by another vehicle, do not go faster. Keep driving and stick to busy main roads. As soon as you can, drive into a busy area where you can contact the police - a petrol station forecourt is ideal. If you don't want to get out of the car, sound your horn to attract attention. Consider buying a personal attack alarm.
- If you are driving to a cash point, use a well-lit and visible cash point. Lock your car and take the car keys with you while you use the cash point.
- If you have remote control locking, only unlock the doors when you reach your vehicle.
- Keep your keys in your hand, ready to use, so that you're not distracted looking for them next to your car.
- When returning to your parked car, remain aware of what's around you.
