Security suppliers
It is important that you carefully identity what security measures your business needs – don’t do this only after your business becomes a victim of crime.
First steps
Allocate a specific budget for your business security.
Find out the nature and quality of protection required by your insurance company. Insurance companies may give you a list of companies that they consider to be reputable in a particular sector.
Large companies should consider using specialist security consultants. Contact your local crime prevention and reduction adviser for general advice.
Questions that you should ask a security supplier
- How long has the company been trading?
- Can it provide an ongoing service?
- Is it a member of a recognised industry body or association?
- What is the level of training and qualifications of the staff?
- Can the company carry out all of the work, or is some sub-contracted?
- Does the company specialise in any particular field?
- Is it adequately covered by insurance?
- Can it provide references from satisfied customers?
Next steps
- Draw up a shortlist of companies.
- Contact those shortlisted companies. Tell them exactly what your security needs are. Let them provide their expert advice on how to solve them.
- There are often several options that could meet your needs. Make sure that your shortlisted companies explain the advantages and disadvantages of each option clearly.
- Always confirm the quality of the equipment that is to be installed. Poor-quality equipment can be cheaper, but it can carry long-term costs – it may break down or need regular servicing. On the other hand, some more expensive products and services may include more than you actually need.
- Always get a specification, written in layman’s terms. This should include exactly what the supplier is agreeing to provide – for example, how many cameras will be supplied, and how many guards will be employed.
- Talk to at least three companies, compare the specifications and quotes, and make an informed choice.
