Introduction video transcript

Hello and welcome to Project Griffin, which is a national initiative designed to encourage members of the community to work in partnership with us, the police, to deter and detect terrorist activity and crime.

We will only succeed if we work together. We need to work together to:

  • Raise awareness of current terrorist and crime issues.
  • Share and gather intelligence and information.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Identify solutions to defeat terrorism and crime.
  • Give people the knowledge and confidence to report suspicious activity and behaviour.

In essence, Project Griffin revolves around an ‘Awareness Day’ – a day for sharing information. We share information with you, our key partners in the community, in a clear and structured way. We aim to work with people who are involved in some way with the safety and security of a building, business or local area and to empower them to recognise and report suspicious activity and behaviour to the police. The topics covered will include:

  • Information about the current threat level.
  • An understanding of what we call ‘hostile reconnaissance’.
  • A description of the key components of an explosive device.
  • Information about the sorts of devices the terrorist might use - including person or vehicle-borne devices.

The Awareness Day also serves to help people think about their own local procedures and processes for dealing with certain types of incident during times of emergency – and it may lead you to make changes.

Thames Valley Police and its partners have a responsibility to provide a high quality service – in the face of threats and risks that range from the local to the national and international. The trust and confidence of our customers is essential in achieving an environment that is safe for all communities.

Making ourselves accessible to you through Project Griffin is part of this process, part of our commitment to you.

This awareness day has been designed with you in mind, as not only partners of Thames Valley Police but also members of our community with an interest, not only in looking after your own businesses but also in the safety of the broader communities in which you work.

Project Griffin is good for Thames Valley Police, good for business and, most importantly, good for the safety of our community.

Thank you for attending.
