Advice checklist
We know that many victims feel uneasy about reporting domestic abuse. Please don't. Don't suffer in silence - we can help you.
- Try to keep calm. Do not retaliate.
- Keep a careful note of everything that has happened. Include the date, time, place and details of any witnesses.
If you think that you may need to escape from a domestic abuser in a hurry, and are worried about what might happen, please check the following:
- Do you have the contact numbers that you might need, written down in a safe place?
- Have you planned how to get to a phone from which your call cannot be traced by your abuser?
- Is your mobile phone fully charged?
- Do you have enough money to make a phone call? Do you have a pre-paid phone card that you can use?
- Do you have enough money for a bus or taxi? Is there a friend that you trust to collect you?
- Have you got all important documents with you, including your driving licence, passport (especially important for non-UK citizens), National Insurance number, child benefit book, and birth certificate? You may need them.
- Have you packed a bag with all of the above things inside? Keep the bag at a safe address.
- Have you got these things for any children that you may need to take with you?
