Your legal rights
If you are a victim of domestic abuse, and require legal advice, there is help and support available to you.
Thames Valley Police Domestic Abuse Units hold a list of solicitors who are experienced in family, marital and domestic abuse law. Please contact your local Domestic Abuse Unit to request this list. Of course, you are free to contact your existing solicitor or any other solicitor of your choice.
What could solicitors do for you?
- Offer emergency funding (formerly known as Legal Aid), depending on circumstances.
- Arrange injunctions against domestic abusers, even within 24 hours.
- Provide legal advice to victims in specialist areas of family, marital and domestic abuse law.
- Organise court hearings.
- Give formal support in official dealings with legal institutions.
Injunctions
Injunctions, non-molestation orders and non-occupation orders are granted by County or Magistrates Court judges. They place conditions on a domestic abuse offender.
They are usually applied for through a solicitor. You may wish to contact your local Domestic Abuse Unit by calling 101 for advice before applying for an injunction.
