Cannabis production - what to watch out for
Commercial cannabis cultivation is a growing industry in the UK. It generates millions of pounds in revenue to organised gangs, and has a damaging effect on communities.
Cannabis factories range from small enterprises in a bedroom, to barns and industrial premises that have been adapted for large-scale production.
Cannabis production can cause substantial damage to property and an increased risk of fire in converted premises. It can also bring many other forms of crime into the area, including human trafficking, money laundering, prostitution and violent assaults.
What to look out for
Signs that a building is possibly being used for cannabis cultivation include:
- Windows always closed and blacked out.
- Activity only heard during the night.
- Unusual smells or sounds.
- Fertiliser bags, grow bags or water piping lying around.
- More bin bags outside the property than usual.
- New locks or alarms installed.
- Other suspicious or unusual activity.
