What police can do

If you breach the regulations, you could be prosecuted and end up with a criminal record. You could face a fine of up to £5,000 and/or six months imprisonment.

The regulations do not give police any specific powers to stop and search people or to seize and confiscate items. However, existing police powers enable us to take action in certain situations. For example, if we believe that a person will harm themselves or others, or damage property.

Police can use powers under the Anti-Social Behaviour Act if they have evidence that people are persistently causing nuisance, harm or distress with fireworks. You can be arrested for throwing a firework in a public place.
