Outside lighting

A well-lit property makes your property much less likely to be targeted by a burglar, and reduces your fear of crime.

Please consider the crime prevention advice below to make sure that your property is well lit.

• Make sure that your house number is visible from the road outside of your house and in the dark. A visible house number helps police, ambulance and fire services to find your house quickly in an emergency.
• Install passive infra-red (PIR) sensor floodlights at the front and back of your property. A PIR sensor automatically switches on a bright floodlight when it detects movement in its range.
• Invest in low wattage lights that come on automatically at dusk and stay on until dawn. Low wattage economy bulbs can cost less than 1p per night in electricity. There are different types of low wattage lights - ask your hardware store for advice, or contact your local crime prevention and reduction adviser.
• Carefully position your outside lighting so that it doesn't create dark, shadowed areas. Make sure that your outside lighting doesn't shine into nearby properties and can't be easily damaged.
• Contact your local council if street lamps break or stop working in your neighbourhood.
