Police and partners support National Interfaith Week - Aylesbury
Thursday 19 November 2009, 9:50am
An Aylesbury-based group, Learning Together Living in Harmony, is holding an event to bring together people from different religions and cultures.
The event takes place between 10.00am and 1.30pm on Saturday 21 November at Aylesbury Vale Academy and is part of England’s first National Interfaith Week. The aim of National Interfaith Week is to increase knowledge and understanding between people of religious and non-religious belief.
Saturday’s event is for anyone, aged 16 and over, living in Aylesbury and the surrounding area. It will feature speakers from nine different faiths: The Baha’I Faith, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Jainism, Judaism, Quakerism, and Sikhism.
The Learning Together Living in Harmony group acknowledges help from Thames Valley Police, Aylesbury Town Council, Aylesbury Vale District Council, Buckinghamshire County Council, and Islah Youth Provision and Community Engagement.
Neelam Mahmood, a Thames Valley Police prevent engagement officer who has been involved in organising the event, said: “We live in a multi-faith and multi-cultural community - this event is a celebration of this.
“Meeting with and learning about people of different faiths helps to break down barriers and remove prejudice or suspicion, ensuring that we can live in harmony.”
Reverend David Jenkins, one of the organisers, said: “This is an opportunity to meet with people from other communities, who may have different faiths or may be of no faith.
“It will provide some key information about each featured faith, and people will have time to mingle, to discuss with one another and to share a meal together.”
There will be displays and tables where people can browse leaflets and booklets. Hot and cold drinks and biscuits will be available during the morning. Lunch tickets will be given out on arrival from 10.00am, but will be on a first-come-first-served basis.
