CCMT receives national standard in promoting diversity

The Chief Constable’s Management Team (CCMT) and five Thames Valley Police commanders have achieved a national standard in promoting equality and valuing diversity.
The 11 senior managers from Thames Valley Police, plus one member of Thames Valley Police Authority, were assessed as part of the national strategy for improving performance in race and diversity, which was launched by the National Policing Improvement Agency (opens new window) in 2004.
They all achieved the AA1 national occupational standard, which ensures that they contribute to:
- Eliminating discrimination and establishing an ethos of fair treatment for everybody.
- Ensuring policies, systems and processes enable good practice in dealing with diversity, both within the Force and externally, to inspire trust and confidence from the communities that they serve. Through this, they will be able to develop and maintain the skills and behaviours that give them confidence to treat people fairly and to challenge inequality.
- Providing reassurance to the service and the public about the compliance with diversity legislation.
- Providing improved interaction – for example, driving up trust, confidence and feelings of safety. In doing so, it improves satisfaction in the police and encourages better intelligence, information and support from the public.
Chief Constable of Thames Valley Police, Sara Thornton, said: “The NPIA asked that priority groups be identified for full assessment against AA1. This group includes those that have a strong influence over the behaviour of others and therefore includes all trainers, assessors, newly-promoted sergeants and inspectors.
“To show our commitment to this development process, my management team and I agreed to undertake the full assessment. We saw it as an opportunity for us to look at our current practice and compare it against the national standards for diversity. It was also an opportunity to reassure our staff and the community that we value diversity.”
