A34 closed following fatal road traffic collision - Newbury

Thames Valley Police is appealing for witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision on the A34 this morning (24/3).
Police received a report shortly after 5am of a single-vehicle road traffic collision involving a lorry on the northbound carriageway just north of the A343 at Wash Common.
The driver of the lorry, believed to be a man aged in his sixties, died at the scene. No one else was injured in the incident.
The northbound carriageway between the A343 and the A4 is expected to remain closed for several hours and the southbound carriageway will also be closed while the vehicle is recovered. Motorists are advised to avoid the area at present.
Inspector Paul Winks, from the Joint Operations Unit for Roads Policing, said: “At present we are investigating a fatal road traffic collision which occurred on the A34 northbound around half a mile north of the A343 at Wash Common.
"Officers are currently working with other agencies to complete an investigation and to recover the vehicle. The northbound carriageway will be closed for approximately two hours and the southbound carriageway will also need to be closed to recover the vehicle.
“I appreciate this is a busy Monday morning and I would like to reassure motorists we are trying to get the road open as soon as possible. I would like to thank drivers for their patience following disruption caused by this incident.
“If anyone witnessed the collision or saw the vehicle travelling prior to the collision I would ask them to contact police.”
