Being Seen, Being Heard - West Oxfordshire, Community Safety Partnership
Tuesday 23 February 2016, 5:09pm
Teams of students from six secondary schools in West Oxfordshire will be battling it out to be crowned winners of a community safety project idea at this year’s “Have Your Say Day” on Friday 26 February.
Now in its sixth year, the Have Your Say Day encourages young people to think about problems in their local area by choosing an issue to try and solve. The day begins with a brief explanation of community safety and the various issues this encompasses such as anti-social behaviour, youth services, alcohol and drugs and local policing. Each school group works on identifying a problem in their area and coming up with an idea of how to deal with it. A series of presentations then sees the groups pitching their ideas to a panel of judges, which includes representatives from the partner organisations in the West Oxfordshire Community Safety Partnership. The winning school wins £150 worth of book vouchers and the runner-up receives £50.
West Oxfordshire District Council Chairman Cllr Norman MacRae MBE said: “The Community Safety Partnership regularly engages with residents to find out their neighbourhood concerns. It’s extremely important that the opinions of young people are listened to as well and considered when decisions are made and the Youth Have Your Say Day provides us with a platform to reach this age group. ”
Superintendent Kath Lowe, Area Commander for Cherwell and West Oxfordshire said: “The Have Your Say Day is always an enjoyable and interesting event. Educating young people about community safety issues and their impact is vital to contributing towards safer communities and it’s great to receive feedback from the young people about their own concerns. Suggested project ideas in past years have been very well thought through and everyone involved is looking forward to seeing this year’s presentations.”
