Wing North neighbourhood update

Update for May

Here is the latest Wing North neighbourhood update from Police Community Support Officer (PCSO) Paula Boston.

Anti-social behaviour (ASB)

Once again reports of anti-social behaviour are minimal, which is good for all of us in the Wing North area, but, with the good weather now upon us, we have been informed of young people playing football near vehicles and houses and unfortunately the locations do not suit the style of playing. Balls are constantly going into the gardens of the bungalows in Wantage Crescent and damage has been caused to gardens, as well as fences damaged by older children climbing into the gardens. Even the polite requests by the younger children to have their balls returned does, quite understandably, get annoying when the doorbell rings for the umpteenth time in the evening. Of course nobody wants to stop children playing outside in the good weather but this must be with consideration and care and with the type of play appropriate for the area.

Good news stories

Thames Valley Police, in partnership with Aylesbury Vale District Council (ADVC) have set up the Clear Car Campaign. This scheme enables police officers and PCSOs to identify vulnerable vehicles and take positive preventative action to reduce the chances of the owner becoming a victim of crime.

During the course of our working day we often patrol areas where vehicles have been left unattended and check to see whether any belongings have been left in the vehicle. If so, a letter is sent to the registered keeper of the vehicle with crime prevention advice. Making people aware may prevent them from becoming victims of car crime in the future.

Charity football planned

PCSO Tina Hobson has had a good response from organisations and individuals offering their time and items for the charity football event in Stewkley recreation ground on 18 July. Tina is very keen to put together a celebrity team and any help would be appreciated, between us all we must be able to reel in some friendly, willing celebs to play against the local and the 999 teams!

Any raffle/auction donations from local businesses would also be very much appreciated. Contact PCSO Tina Hobson on 07779 586565.

Offenders brought to justice

On 17 April a man in Burton-On-Trent was issued with an £80 fixed penalty notice for disorder, due to the ongoing harassment of an ex-employer. The man sent numerous abusive texts on his mobile phone, over a prolonged period of time, to the other party in the belief that he could not be traced as his number was never divulged. Due to police and mobile phone network companies working together, he has discovered that this was not the case.

A man was arrested in Stoke Hammond for an assault on a woman on 28 April at her home address. He pleaded guilty at court and was swiftly sentenced to 18 weeks custody.

On 28 April a 17-year-old man was arrested in Leighton Buzzard for being in possession of a laptop computer that had been stolen in a burglary in Stewkley between 17 and 18 April 2010. Further arrests are anticipated in relation to this matter.

Neighbourhood priorities

Speed checks have been conducted on an adhoc basis in Soulbury, Wing and Stoke Hammond this month. Again it has been good news in those areas as there has been no necessity to issue any speeding tickets, as there were no excessive speeds detected at those times.

A number of drivers were stopped however and given advice. Speed checks were also conducted at Drayton Parslow on the afternoon of the 8 April. On this occasion two speeding tickets were issues to drivers travelling in excess of 40mph on Main Road. Would just like to add that both of those were local residents of the village.

Parking still remains a problem in some of the villages. We receive reports from people complaining that vehicles are parked on pavements causing obstruction to pedestrians especially for prams/pushchairs and also for people who need to use mobility scooters. When we check these out, a vast majority of the vehicles are half parked on the pavements where more than adequate room is available on the road.  It has been told to us many times by the drivers that they have parked in that manner to allow more room on the roads. Please park on the roads and not the paths, if the road is too narrow or there are other cars parked so you feel that parking there is not suitable, please find an alternative section of road where you can park responsibly.

Neighbourhood Action Group (NAG)

The next NAG meeting is going to be held at Stoke Hammond on 22 June 2010.   The NAG have hopefully now finalised the purchase of Speedwatch equipment for the villages of Soulbury, Stoke Hammond, Great Brickhill and Drayton Parslow. The working system was kindly demonstrated by a Cheddington Speedwatch organiser in Stoke Hammond so hopefully any queries have now been addressed. It is now anticipated that the equipment will have been purchased prior to the next NAG meeting as funding has apparently been approved by all four parish councils involved in this project.

Partnership activity

Years 1 and 2 at Overstone School in Wing invited PCSO Boston to visit their ‘police station’, set up in their classroom, to talk about the role of a PCSO and to answer questions from the children. This is always a pleasure and lovely to walk away from the school with a smile that only the innocence of that age group can bring.

It is good for the young children to understand the different roles within the police service and know who we are and that we are friendly and approachable – all the police ‘fly on the wall’ TV programmes mainly show the reactive style of policing and that’s not what we are all about.

Have your say meetings

Have your Say meetings are so you can meet your neighbourhood policing team and tell us about the issues that matter most to you! Please see planned meetings for May below.

If you are part of an organisation and would like us to visit your group to offer crime prevention advice and listen to any concerns please contact us – we will be more than happy to assist where we can.

7 May 2010, Mobile Post Office, Drayton Parslow, between 9am and 11am in Greenacres Hall

24 May, Mobile Post Office, Great Brickhill, between 1.30pm and 3.30pm in the Village Hall

28 May, Youth Café, Great Brickhill, bike & scooter marking at High Ash School.

Community messaging - have you joined up?

Thames Valley Police is committed to involving the community in the policing of the counties of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. We believe that by improving the flow of information between the community and its police we can all make a greater impact in the prevention and detection of crime and anti-social behaviour.

Community messaging is not a new system – many people refer to it under the ‘old’ name of Ringmaster – which is the name of the IT system we use to send messages.

We are re-launching Community messaging tohelp improvecommunications with communities and the service we provide.

People can read information and sign up online at www.tvpcommunitymessaging.org or by phoning the police non-emergency number 08458 505 505 and speaking with their Neighbourhood Watch Administrator.

Car crime

Steer clear of car crime across Aylesbury Vale!

If you’re thinking of taking advantage of the sunny weather with a walk in the Buckinghamshire countryside, don’t let thieves spoil it for you.

Although vehicle crime in the Vale is one of the lowest rates across the entire Thames Valley, AVDC and Thames Valley Police are asking residents to spare a thought for car security when visiting beauty spots in the coming months.

The misconception is that by parking in the middle of nowhere, possessions will be safer but the truth is that a quieter setting provides the perfect opportunity for a thief.  Don’t give thieves an easy opportunity. Follow the steps below to protect your car and valuables….

  • Securely look all doors and shut windows and sunroofs, even if you’re leaving your car for just a few minutes
  • Don’t leave anything on display in your car, even a coat can be tempting
  • Take all valuables with you – do not leave them in the glove box, in the boot or under the seat, this is the first place a thief will look

For a car air freshener or a ‘no valuables have been left in this car’ sign please call into Customer Services at Aylesbury Vale District Council, 66 High Street, Aylesbury or visit the AVDC desk at the Buckingham Centre, Verney Close, Buckingham. Information is also available at www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/communitysafety

If you are unable to travel due to a disability, please contact the council on

01296 585615 and we can arrange to post the item.
