Man charged in connection with armed robberies – Slough

A man arrested in Berkshire last week, after absconding from HMP Ford, has been charged in connection with a number of armed robberies in Slough and returned to prison.

Thirty-three-year-old Nigel Carpenter, formerly of North Street, Slough, absconded from HMP Ford, West Sussex, on the 11 July 2009.

Following a police operation, Carpenter was arrested by police from an address in Moray Drive, Slough, shortly after 9.30am on Friday last week (18/12).

On the following day (19/12), he was charged with escaping from lawful custody; five counts of robbery*; one count of attempted robbery**; six counts of being in possession of a firearm whilst committing an offence***; and one count of vehicle interference.   

Carpenter was remanded in police custody and appeared before Slough Magistrates’ Court yesterday (21/12) where he was remanded in prison.

His next court appearance is in March next year.

*Five counts of robbery relate to the following incidents – Ladbrokes Racing, Farnham Road, in Slough, shortly before 9pm on 16 December 2009; Coral bookmakers, Chalvey Road, Chalvey, in Slough, at 7.15pm on 11 December 2009; Coral bookmakers, Mirador Crescent, Upton Lea, in Slough, at 8.50pm on 7 December 2009; Iceland Frozen Foods, Farnburn Avenue, Slough, 5.55pm on 30 November 2009; and Coral bookmakers, Stoke Road, Slough, at 9pm on 24 November 2009.

** Attempted robbery relates to an incident at Coral bookmakers, Stoke Road, Slough, at 9.35pm on 4 December 2009.

*** All six counts of being in possession of a firearm relate to the five counts of robbery and one count of attempted robbery listed above.
