A Police Contact Centre Officer takes a call

As a Contact Management Centre Officer or Police Controller you’ll play a critical role in our response to emergencies. You could be taking down vital details from the caller, or co-ordinating police assistance.  Our officers need as much information as possible and it will be up to you to communicate with callers clearly, and carefully record everything they tell you.

You will receive a high standard of training initially and throughout your role to become a fully-fledged professional. As part of your initial development, you will complete an apprenticeship in Contact Centre (Emergency Services and Integrated Urgent Care).



You will be resilient, reliable and able to cope in a pressured environment with the ability to remain calm in a variety of situations. You will be able to use your own initiative and professional judgement to solve problems, identifying risk and vulnerability as well as displaying empathy and tact.

The eligibility criteria for the role includes the following:

  • competent use of IT systems and willingness to learn bespoke in-house systems
  • able to type 30 words per minute
  • GCSEs (grade 9-4 / A-C) or equivalent in English and Maths are desirable (or will have to be achieved during the first 12 months of employment)
  • over the age of 18
