It’s the adrenaline when the call comes in. It’s being there when people need you the most. It’s remaining calm in high-pressure situations. It’s being ready for that very first call.

As a Police Contact Centre Officer or Police Controller you’ll play a critical role in our response to emergencies. You could be taking down vital details from the caller, or co-ordinating police assistance. Our officers need as much information as possible and it will be up to you to communicate with callers clearly, and carefully record everything they tell you.

You will receive a high standard of training initially and throughout your role to become a fully-fledged professional. As part of your initial development, you will complete an apprenticeship in Contact Centre (Emergency Services and Integrated Urgent Care).


You will be resilient, reliable and able to cope in a pressured environment with the ability to remain calm in a variety of situations. You will be able to use your own initiative and professional judgement to solve problems, identifying risk and vulnerability as well as displaying empathy and tact.

The eligibility criteria for the role includes the following:

  • competent use of IT systems and willingness to learn bespoke in-house systems
  • able to type 28 words per minute
  • English and Maths GCSE A-C are desirable on entry however successful applicants without these GCSEs will be offered support to achieve an equivalent level of qualification in these subjects (functional skills level 2) during the first 12 months of employment in order to achieve the apprenticeship qualification
  • 18 years of age of over
  • Due to the 24/7 fully rotational shift pattern you must have the capability to travel to different locations across the force as public transport may not be available or suitable at these times.
