Thames Valley Police launches new mobile application to deliver local policing news and community updates.
Thames Valley Police has today (27/3) launched its first mobile app to the public.
The Thames Valley Alert app, which is available now for free on Android and iPhone, delivers the latest local policing news direct to mobile devices and instantly notify users when a message is sent.
The new app is the next generation of the force’s successful community messaging system, allowing for the first time, the use of GPS (Global Positioning System) to target messages straight to people wherever they happen to be at any one time in the Thames Valley.
Whether it be notification of a road traffic collision near to where you are, an appeal for witnesses following a recent crime in your locality, or information on a nearby major incident, proximity messaging both improves the relevancy of communication and enables the public to take immediate, appropriate action.
In addition to local policing alerts, the app will:
- Feed through the latest Thames Valley-wide news from the force Twitter account feed;
- Provide members of the public with details of their nearest police station
The Thames Valley Alert system currently has 105,000 subscribers and has proved a valuable way over the last few years of providing information, reassurance and awareness to the public, as well as helping to build resilience in communities.
Communications Manager, Claire Ingram, said: “We are constantly working to improve and modernise our communication and engagement with the public in a way that meets their needs and the Thames Valley Alert App is a great step forward in delivering this.
“We recognise that people want to-the-minute updated and relevant information and content, in an easily consumable form and the app has been developed with that in mind.
“It also provides a great opportunity for us to share our important messages more widely. Currently, people sign up to the Thames Valley Alerts system to receive updates on where they live in the Thames Valley. The location based service of the app, now makes the system relevant to anyone – whether you live, work or are simply visiting the region.”
Thames Valley Alert is the local messaging platform of the national Neighbourhood Alert system, designed and constructed by VISAV Limited.
Twenty other forces around the country have subscribed to the Neighbourhood Alert system and across the country there are now upwards of 500,000 people receiving local policing messages every day.
Mike Douglas from VISAV, who have developed the new app with Thames Valley, added: “The development of the app with TVP has been a great example of how a forward-thinking force can provide and improve the service to the public in order to keep them safe.
“Many of the other 19 forces that use Neighbourhood Alert are eagerly awaiting their version of the Thames Valley Alert App which TVP has pioneered.

Notes to Editors:
- The new app will only send instant notifications to those who have access to the application and have activated GPS and push notification on their phone.
- Users will still receive alerts via email, even if they don’t download the new app. Visit the Thames Valley Alert website for more information.
- The application is purely for sending to the public information that they have signed up to receive.
- The TVP Alert App will not be used to track people’s locations and will not record where people have been.
