Following a Thames Valley Police investigation, a man has been jailed for attempted rape and sexual assault in Oxford.
Ross Barrow, aged 31, of Eastern Avenue, Oxford, was sentenced to four years and eight months in prison at Oxford Crown Court yesterday (27/2).
He pleaded guilty to one count each of attempted rape and assault by penetration at a previous hearing the same court on 11 November last year.
On the evening of 20 September last year, Barrow followed a woman into a cubicle in the female toilets at the Westgate Shopping Centre.
While inside the cubicle, Barrow forcefully removed the victim’s clothing, sexually assaulted her and tried to rape her.
The victim called out for help but Barrow covered her mouth to try to silence her, causing her bruising and injuries to her mouth and face.
However, a member of the public heard the victim and called police and security at the shopping centre.
Security broke down the cubicle door and saw the victim in a distressed state. Both Barrow and the victim then left the toilets.
Officers found the victim when they arrived on scene and provided her support, while they identified Barrow and arrested him nearby soon afterwards.
Barrow was charged with the offences two days later.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Chris Bennett, of Oxford CID, said: “I would like to thank the victim and witnesses involved for supporting our investigation, which has led to a successful conviction and imprisonment of a dangerous sexual predator.
“Ross Barrow targeted the victim, following her into the toilets in the Westgate Shopping Centre and attacked her.
“Thames Valley Police takes violence against women and girls extremely seriously and I hope this sentencing encourages other sexual violence victims to come forward.
