In a ceremony held at Thames Valley Police’s training centre in Sulhamstead, Chief Constable Jason Hogg presented Liberty Leeder, a member of the public, with a commendation for her extraordinary bravery and selflessness in saving the lives of three young children from a burning vehicle.
In August 2022, Liberty came across a serious road traffic collision in Buckinghamshire. Without hesitation, she stopped her vehicle and ran to assist, finding a car that had veered into a ditch, its engine revving, and smoke filling the cabin.
Despite the imminent danger, Liberty worked quickly to remove the three children—aged 16 months, 7 years, and 8 years—from the car.
As Liberty started to remove the children from the rear of the car, the tyres burst and she could see flames coming from the engine. Liberty then provided comfort, reassurance and care to the children in what was undoubtedly a distressing and frightening situation until officers arrived on the scene to assist.
Her swift and courageous actions not only prevented a potential tragedy but also ensured that the children received the care and safety they needed.
Superintendent Euan Livingstone commented:
“Liberty’s actions on that day embody the true definition of a Good Samaritan.
“It is very clear to me, that had Liberty not acted as quickly as she did, and displayed the selfless act of bravery on that day, this could and no doubt would have been a very different outcome. I am in no doubt that Liberty has saved the lives of three young children that day.”
Speaking about her commendation, Liberty said:
“I am very grateful to have received this award as at the time of the incident I acted through instinct rather than courage. I am, however, aware that had I have not taken these actions, the outcome could have been very different.”
