Man jailed for intentional strangulation and assault – Oxford

Following a Thames Valley Police investigation, a man has been sentenced for intentional strangulation and assault in Oxford.

Robert McGuckin, ages 28, of Victoria Road, Great Yarnmoth, was sentenced at Oxford Crown Court today (17/6) to three years and one month in prison.

McGuckin plead guilty on the first day of trial, to one count each of intentional strangulation and assaulting a person thereby occasioning them actual bodily harm.

On 7 December 2024 at around 3am in Union Street and then further onto Cross Street, Oxford, McGuckin arranged to meet his ex-partner to return property belonging to them. During this meeting, he launched a sustained and violent attack on her, repeatedly striking her to the face and strangling her until she lost consciousness.

McGuckin was arrested the same day and was charged the following day, 8 December 2024.  

Investigating officer, Detective Constable Michael Hopcroft said: “McGuckin’s behaviour was completely unacceptable and his horrific actions driven by an inability to accept the separation of a relationship.

“McGuckin is a clear danger to woman and girls, this type of violence will not be tolerated by the police.

“I am pleased for the custodial sentence provided from the court and I want to commend the victim for their bravery and continued support throughout the case.”
