A member of Thames Valley Police staff who works in Counter Terrorism Policing South East, has been awarded a British Empire Medal.

Jan Bulfield was recognised for her services to policing, following a 43-year career in the police as a former officer, member of police staff, and voluntary services as a police negotiator.

Jan works in Counter Terrorism Policing South East, which is hosted by Thames Valley Police providing operational and specialist support.

She started her career as an officer in Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary where she served for 34 years, retiring as a Detective Inspector. She went on to become one of the force’s first female forensic detectives providing a service where any rape or sexual assault victim could be responded to by an all- female team.

She also served in a variety of complex crime detective roles including in Southampton CID East and West, Major Crime, Serious and Organised Crime, Money Laundering, Drugs Related Harm, and Public Protection teams as a Constable, Sergeant and Inspector.

Following her retirement in 2016 she joined Hampshire Constabulary’s review team conducting homicide, child death and cold case reviews and BCU inspections. In 2018 she joined CTPSE as National Capability Support to the Head of Unit and CTP Investigations Capability Lead.

Jan also operated in Hampshire as a Hostage and Crisis Negotiator for 15 years as both Officer and Special Constable.

Jan Bulfield, said on hearing about the award: “I am truly honoured and humbled to receive this award whilst doing a job I love, but do so as a reflection of the great people and teams I have had the privilege of working with across both Forces, and the amazing support of family and friends.”

Jan has also been unwavering in her support for others within Thames Valley Police and Hampshire, working as a mental health and cancer peer supporter with her OK9 welfare dog Molly, regularly travelling to support colleagues who are responding to the challenges of policing.

Thames Valley Police Chief Constable Jason Hogg, said: “I would like to say a huge congratulations to Jan, who has worked in policing for 43 years of her life. Her dedication to developing and supporting others, as well as her commitment to supporting victims is clear, and I am delighted that she has been commended in this way. She should be hugely proud of her achievements; she truly is a selfless individual who has dedicated all aspects of her life to helping others.”
